Greetings VHS friends! So sorry I will not be able to join you for the big reunion. Here in Georgia, we begin the school year early with students starting August 7th. Tough to go on vacation the first week of school. Hope you all have a wonderful time together; I’ll be thinking of you.
I am beginning my 33rd year of work at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, a state day school for deaf students. I am the curriculum specialist at the school and have been involved in somehow making the state curriculum appropriate for the students at our school. We have about 230 students, ages 3-21. We’re all trying to figure out how No Child Left Behind works for students with disabilities. I will, however, be retiring after this year and will leave the “figuring out” to people hopefully smarter than I!
Long time friend, Sharon Meek, and I have a second home in the North Georgia mountains in a small “town” called Cherry Log. Two years ago, we enlarged our cabin and plan to retire there next summer. We look forward to the move to a smaller community. Sharon is an independent contractor doing web design and database development with agencies serving children with disabilities. The plan is for me to join her in her work so that we both hopefully will be able to enjoy a more leisurely pace.
We currently find ourselves busy with family including visits with my mom and dad who are retired in Atlanta and Sharon’s parents who also live in north Georgia. We enjoy spending time with nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, brothers, sisters, as well as new friends in the mountains. We’ve joined a very active church that has a large retirement population very willing to lend their talents to the betterment of the community. We keep busy and out of trouble, both working, keeping up two households, and helping out when we can.
If it’s hard to imagine Georgia with mountains, we invite you to come visit us in our log cabin; we’d love to show you our Southern-style hospitality. The love of nature that comes from living in a place like South Dakota never leaves your soul…..nor do fond memories of friends and experiences. What a wonderful place to grow up; cheers to Vermillion, South Dakota! Enjoy your time together…..Marsha |
